Valentine Blues

Bawat araw sinusundan
'Di ka naman tumitingin
Ano'ng aking dapat gawin
- Kailan, MYMP*

Yes, this is a post about Valentine's Day, that most anticipated day in the month of February. Valentine's day is said to have a tragic origin. The Roman emperor, Claudius the Cruel, was said to have difficulties in recruiting young men for his army because these men didn't want to leave their sweethearts so he canceled all engagements and marriages in Rome. St. Valentine was a priest who secretly married the couples. He was caught and beheaded around February 14th, 270 B.C.

Regardless of its origin, V-Day has been one of the most celebrated days in a year. As someone who is single, its importance is somehow lost to me. But when I think hard about it, V-Day is a celebration of love - all kinds of love. Love for one's family, for one's work -- even unrequited love. But love shouldn't be just celebrated in one day. I think that everyday should be like Valentine's Day because you'll never know - one day you're here and then you wont be, and it's better that you've expressed how you feel and let your loved ones know you love them - V-Day or not.
